The programme

Social clubs are a special part of Rotherham's industrial heritage and local culture, and they have a vital role to play in the future of the borough's communities. Through a borough-wide survey and a launch event at Thurcroft Miners Institute in March 2026, we heard directly from clubs about what's working, what's difficult, and what support they need to thrive in the years ahead.

This listening process has shaped a programme of group learning events and tailored one-to-one business support, designed specifically for social clubs across Rotherham.

Phase One: Learning events

Four evening sessions, hosted in social clubs across the borough,  for committee members and any club members who want to take a more active role in shaping the future of their organisation.

Each session includes case studies from clubs that have diversified their offer or secured funding, practical guidance and resources, and an opportunity to speak directly with a representative from Rotherham Council. A hot meal and networking time are included.

All sessions are accessible by bus.

Phase Two: One-to-one business support

Clubs that attend at least two of the four learning sessions can apply for tailored one-to-one support, delivered by an experienced advisor matched to their needs. Each club receives up to 1.5 days of bespoke support, including at least one in-person visit.

The support begins with a diagnostic call to identify priorities and agree a plan, followed by focused work on the areas that matter most to the club. Key support areas include:

Financial sustainability and funding — Support to address rising operational costs, identify investment opportunities, and overcome barriers to accessing grants and funding.

End-of-programme showcase

The programme concludes with a networking event bringing together clubs, partners, and local stakeholders to share what's been learned, highlight challenges, and strengthen connections across the sector in Rotherham.
